This is your first step towards becoming qualified as a bus driver in the New South Wales snowfields. Only approved drivers are allowed to provide bus or coach services carrying passengers in the NSW snowfields.
It covers the theoretical and practical components of driver training required by Transport for NSW (TFNSW). And is a joint initiative between Port Stephens Coaches and RAISE Training.
This course is to prepare drivers to drive in snowy areas safely and to equip them with an understanding of the legal requirements to operate a heavy vehicle in the snow. Drivers will practice safe driving behaviors and chain fitting procedures while receiving coaching, feedback and assessment.
Research had shown some of the hazardous situations drivers had encountered in the NSW snowfields and some drivers had not been adequately trained for safe operation in the snowfields.
This course is designed to prepare operators and drivers to become safer by understanding the risks and hazards associated with driving in the snowfields.
It is made up of two parts, one for theory and one for practical.
In the theory component, drivers will learn about Kosciuszko National Park and its layout, fatigue management, equipment they are required to use and carry as well as safe driving practices in the Alpine Region.
In the practical component, drivers will be asked to demonstrate the skills they have learnt and the safety procedures they need to follow while operating in the Alpine region.
This course is tailored for individuals aspiring to qualify as bus drivers in the New South Wales snowfields. It is a prerequisite for those seeking approval to provide bus or coach services in this region. Developed in collaboration between Port Stephens Coaches and RAISE Training, it addresses the essential theoretical and practical aspects mandated by Transport for NSW (TFNSW). With a focus on ensuring safe navigation and compliance with legal standards, participants will undergo comprehensive training to adeptly operate heavy vehicles in snowy conditions. Through a combination of coaching, feedback, and assessment, drivers will cultivate safe driving habits and proficiency in chain fitting procedures, crucial for navigating the unique challenges of the NSW snowfields.
The program responds to research revealing the hazardous situations encountered by drivers in this region, highlighting the necessity for adequate training to mitigate risks effectively. By fostering an understanding of the inherent dangers and legal obligations associated with snowfield driving, the course aims to enhance operators' and drivers' safety preparedness.
Comprising both theoretical and practical segments, it delves into diverse topics ranging from fatigue management and equipment requirements to safe driving practices within the Alpine Region. During the practical component, participants will showcase their acquired skills and adherence to safety protocols, ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate and operate in the demanding Alpine environment.
In-line with TfNSW Accreditation Bulletin Number 1.3, drivers must have completed the driver training and assessment conducted by an approved RTO. The course will include a theory component (classroom based) as well as a practical component. Employees must have the skills required to drive a vehicle in the NSW snowfields and are competent in the fitting of snow chains supplied by the operator for the vehicle.
At the conclusion of the course, drivers will:
Have a better understanding of the legal and safety requirements they require to operate in the snowfields.
Have the skills to fit snow chains safely and correctly as well as the location of chain fitting bays and parking.
Have a better understanding of the risks and hazards they may encounter, and safe driving practices required to operate in the snowfields.
Understand how to reduce the risk of skidding and accidents associated while driving in the snowfields.
Be issued with a card, certificate and letter of attainment that they are qualified to drive in the NSW snowfields.
This course is divided into two seperate sessions: Theory and Practical Driving.
The duration of the theory course is one approximately 3-4 hours.
Completing the Theory Test
The theory component is to be completed first before the student can attempt the practical. Once the student has completed the theory, they will have two (2) years to complete the practical.
Completing the Practical Test
The practical driving course, conducted in Jindabyne (NSW Snowfields), entails each driver completing one leg from Jindabyne to Thredbo (Alpine Way) and Jindabyne to Perisher. Sessions are divided into two per day, lasting 4 hours each.
