HVCBA Update - November 2024

Surge in Manual Assessment Bookings

Transport has reported a 39 per cent increase in manual assessment bookings for the 2024 financial year.

This increase compared to the 2023 financial year is primarily driven by interstate licence holders upgrading their qualifications in NSW making up around 60 per cent of these bookings.

Around 34 per cent of the increase stems from a workaround required for drivers upgrading from a Heavy Rigid (HR) to a Multi-Combination (MC) licence, which involves a manual booking process for the Heavy Combination (HC) component.

In the meantime, RTOs are asked to refrain from following up manual bookings and other transaction requests via phone or email immediately after submission.

Follow-ups can cause delays in processing requests. Transport is aware of the urgency and aims to finalise all transactions within three hours of receipt.

Transport remains committed to improving the system and ensuring a smoother experience for both applicants and RTOs moving forward.

Earning a Bus Driver Authority

Complete Guide to Earning Bus Driver Authority

Becoming a qualified bus driver in NSW is a rewarding career choice for those who enjoy driving, interacting with people, and seeking job stability. At RAISE Training, we specialise in providing the education and support necessary to help individuals earn their Bus Driver Authority (BDA). This guide will cover everything you need to know about the process, from requirements and training to the benefits of obtaining this credential.

Bus Driver Authority (BDA) is a mandatory certification for anyone who wishes to operate a bus or coach carrying paying passengers in NSW. Without this authority, you cannot legally drive a bus as part of a public or private transport service. The BDA confirms that a driver is both fit to drive and trained to handle the responsibilities associated with transporting people safely. The process involves specific steps, including formal training and certification that assures employers and passengers that you are fully qualified for the role.

Why You Need a Bus Driver Authority

The primary reason for the requirement of a Bus Driver Authority is public safety. Driving a bus with multiple passengers aboard requires more than just basic driving skills. Bus drivers must demonstrate not only advanced driving competence but also a solid understanding of passenger safety, customer service, and regulatory compliance. It is not just about getting passengers from point A to point B – it’s about ensuring their safety, security, and comfort throughout the journey.

Key benefits of obtaining your BDA include legal eligibility to work as a bus driver, increased employment opportunities, and the confidence of being properly trained to handle a variety of road scenarios. In some states, a Bus Driver Authority is required even for volunteer drivers, as safety remains paramount. Additionally, drivers with this authority have the advantage of being more employable and potentially earning higher wages, as they have completed the necessary certifications to ensure they meet the highest safety and operational standards.

At RAISE Training, we offer tailored courses that provide the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain your Bus Driver Authority. Our programs are designed to be comprehensive and easy to understand, ensuring you’re ready to pass the required tests and assessments. We focus on delivering not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills that can help you excel in your bus driving career.

The Requirements for Obtaining a Bus Driver Authority

To qualify for a Bus Driver Authority, you must meet several general criteria. These include being at least 20 years old, holding an unrestricted Australian driver’s licence for a specific period (usually two years or more), proving medical fitness through a medical examination, and passing criminal history and traffic offence checks. These checks ensure that the applicant is suitable to hold a position of responsibility when transporting passengers.

Each Australian state has its own specific rules, regulations, and processes regarding Bus Driver Authorities. For instance, in New South Wales, applicants must complete a Bus Driver Authority Application Form, submit proof of identification, pass medical assessments, and pay a fee to Transport for NSW. Similarly, in Queensland, applicants must undergo a Driver Authorisation process through the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). In Victoria, you must apply through Commercial Passenger Vehicles Victoria (CPVV), while other states may have their own processes for verifying eligibility and issuing Bus Driver Authority permits.

In addition to meeting these state-specific requirements, applicants are also expected to demonstrate good character, which is typically assessed through references or other formal assessments. Some states may even require you to participate in an interview or undergo psychological testing to ensure you can handle the pressure and responsibility that comes with driving a bus full of passengers.

At RAISE Training, we are well-versed in these state-specific requirements and tailor our training to meet the needs of your local authority. This means that when you train with us, you are receiving instruction that is directly relevant to the regulatory environment in which you will be working, ensuring a smooth path to certification and employment.

MC Truck Licensing course

Chain of Responsibility Training for Frontline Staff

If you’re looking to advance your truck driving career, obtaining a Multi Combination (MC) licence is a crucial step. The MC licence allows you to operate larger, more complex vehicles like road trains and B-doubles, significantly expanding your job opportunities and earning potential. At RAISE Training, we offer a top-tier Multi-Combination Truck Licensing course designed to help you achieve your goals. This guide will provide a comprehensive overview of why RAISE Training is the best choice for aspiring MC drivers, covering everything from course structure to key benefits.

A MC (Multi Combination) licence is the highest-level truck driving licence available in Australia. It enables drivers to operate heavy vehicle combinations like B-doubles and road trains, which require advanced driving skills due to their size and weight. Securing a MC licence opens up a world of opportunities for professional drivers, as it allows them to take on more complex driving tasks and access higher-paying roles in the transport and logistics industry.

Why is a MC Licence Important?

There are several reasons why a MC licence is crucial for professional drivers who want to work with large commercial vehicles. Below are some of the key factors:

  1. Increased Job Opportunities: With the demand for skilled MC drivers continuing to grow, holding this licence significantly increases your employment prospects. Companies involved in long-haul transportation, mining, and logistics are always looking for qualified drivers to operate their heavy vehicle fleets. Skilled MC drivers are required to transport goods across long distances and often in challenging environments, such as rural areas or mining sites.
In fact, various industries are heavily dependent on MC drivers, and companies in these sectors are willing to invest in drivers who can manage these responsibilities. Whether you’re seeking employment in road transport, mining, or logistics, having a MC licence will make you an attractive candidate for many well-paying positions.
  2. Higher Earning Potential: MC drivers typically earn more than those with lesser qualifications. Given the complexities and responsibilities associated with operating larger vehicles, companies are willing to pay a premium for qualified professionals. In Australia, drivers with a MC licence often command significantly higher wages than those driving smaller trucks, as the demand for drivers who can operate B-doubles and road trains is strong.
According to industry reports, MC drivers can earn well above the average truck driver salary, with those working in specific sectors such as mining or long-haul transport earning particularly high wages. With a MC licence, you have access to a wide range of lucrative job opportunities that aren’t available to drivers with less advanced qualifications.
  3. Enhanced Skills and Competence: Achieving a MC licence means you’ve mastered the skills required to safely and effectively operate multi-combination vehicles. This not only gives you confidence but also ensures that you’re fully equipped to handle more challenging driving conditions. These include navigating difficult terrain, managing the larger turning radius of multi-combination vehicles, and maintaining safety standards for both yourself and other road users.
Drivers who complete a MC licence course learn how to handle heavy loads, safely manoeuvre large vehicles, and ensure compliance with Australia’s strict road safety regulations. This enhances your overall driving competence and enables you to pursue a long-term career in the transport industry.
  4. Future-Proofing Your Career: As industries like mining and logistics continue to expand, the demand for skilled MC drivers is expected to grow. Obtaining this licence now can help secure your future in a stable, well-paying career. Particularly in rural areas of Australia, the need for drivers who can operate road trains and other large vehicles is projected to increase as the country’s infrastructure and mining industries continue to develop.
Investing in your MC licence now can ensure that you’re in demand for years to come, with opportunities for career growth as the industry evolves. As transport companies continue to move goods over long distances, particularly in remote and rural regions, MC drivers will remain an essential part of the workforce.

At RAISE Training, we focus on providing the most comprehensive MC Truck Licensing course in the market, ensuring that you’re not only qualified but also fully prepared to excel in your career. With an emphasis on practical skills and theoretical knowledge, our course ensures that you’ll have all the tools you need to succeed in the transport and logistics industry.

What Exactly is a MC Licence?

A MC (Multi Combination) licence is required to operate larger, multi-combination vehicles, including:

  • B-doubles (prime movers with two semi-trailers attached).
  • Road trains (prime movers with three or more trailers attached).

These vehicles are significantly larger and more difficult to operate than other types of trucks, which is why specialised training is required. Drivers must be proficient in managing the unique challenges presented by these heavy vehicles, including coupling and uncoupling trailers, navigating tight turns, and safely transporting large loads.

Operating a MC vehicle involves:

  • Understanding how to couple and uncouple trailers safely and efficiently.
  • Learning how to manage the vehicle’s weight distribution for safe driving.
  • Navigating roads in urban, rural, and remote settings.
  • Ensuring compliance with state and federal road safety standards.

Given the complexities of driving multi-combination vehicles, obtaining a MC licence can dramatically improve your skills as a truck driver. By completing this course, you’ll not only be legally qualified to drive these larger vehicles, but you’ll also gain invaluable practical experience that will benefit your career.

The Licensing Process: What You Need to Know

In Australia, the process for obtaining a MC licence can vary slightly between states. However, the core requirements remain the same across the country. Here’s a breakdown of what’s generally required:

  1. Eligibility Criteria: Before applying for a MC licence, you must hold a heavy rigid (HR) or heavy combination (HC) licence for at least one year. This ensures that you have the necessary driving experience before advancing to a multi-combination vehicle.
  2. Medical Assessment: As with other heavy vehicle licences, you’ll need to pass a medical assessment to ensure that you’re fit to drive a MC vehicle. This is particularly important as MC drivers often operate long-haul routes that require extended periods of driving.
  3. Training and Assessment: Completing a MC licence training course is mandatory. This includes both theoretical and practical components, ensuring that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to operate a multi-combination vehicle safely. Upon completing the course, you’ll undergo a practical assessment to demonstrate your proficiency.
  4. State-Specific Guidelines: While the general requirements for a MC licence are consistent across Australia, some states have specific regulations regarding the licensing process. For example, drivers in Queensland need to comply with the Transport and Main Roads (TMR) department’s guidelines, while drivers in New South Wales must meet specific criteria set out by the state’s transport authorities. It’s important to check the specific requirements in your state before applying for your MC licence.

At RAISE Training, we provide support for navigating the state-specific requirements for obtaining your licence. Whether you’re based in Queensland, New South Wales, or any other Australian state, we can guide you through the entire process.
