The TLI41225 Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training – Heavy Vehicle Specialisation is a nationally recognised qualification for experienced heavy vehicle drivers seeking to develop the skills required to train and assess other drivers.

The course combines flexible online learning with practical, face-to-face training and assessment delivered through approved RAISE Training practical delivery partners.

Before applying

Applicants must:

• hold the appropriate current unrestricted heavy vehicle driver licence;
• have sufficient experience operating the relevant heavy vehicle class;
• be able to safely and competently operate the vehicle used for training and assessment;
• have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills for Certificate IV-level study;
• have basic digital skills and access to a suitable internet-connected device;
• meet any state regulator eligibility requirements applying to their intended licensing pathway;
• complete the required online learning before progressing to practical training; and
• provide access to a suitable approved heavy vehicle or separately arrange vehicle hire.

Applicants should be able to read technical and regulatory information, communicate instructions clearly, prepare basic training documents, use email and online learning systems, and upload documents or other assessment evidence where required.

Reasonable support and reasonable adjustment may be available. Adjustments cannot remove or reduce the essential skills and knowledge required by the qualification or licensing outcome.

All applicants complete a course application and suitability review before enrolment is accepted. This helps confirm that the course, delivery arrangements and intended licensing pathway are appropriate.

Do you need a licence?

Yes. Applicants must hold a current unrestricted driver licence for the heavy vehicle class in which they intend to train and seek instructor approval.

Licensing and experience requirements vary between states and territories. Applicants should review the requirements applying in the state where they intend to work before enrolling.

New South Wales applicants

Applicants seeking a New South Wales driving instructor licence must first apply to Transport for NSW and obtain a current Letter of Eligibility.

The Letter of Eligibility must be provided to RAISE Training as part of the enrolment process and before the applicant commences the approved practical training pathway.

Applying in New South Wales? Do not proceed directly to practical training. Obtain your Transport for NSW Letter of Eligibility first.

Queensland applicants

The Queensland regulator recognises the TLI41225 Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training – Heavy Vehicle Specialisation as an approved training qualification for heavy vehicle driver trainer accreditation, subject to the applicant meeting all other requirements.

Heavy vehicle requirement

The applicant or their employer must provide access to a suitable, roadworthy and approved heavy vehicle representative of the relevant vehicle class. The vehicle must be:

• registered and roadworthy;
• suitable for the required practical activities;
• appropriately insured for the proposed use;
• available at the agreed practical training location and time; and
• accepted by the practical delivery partner before use.

Where the applicant or employer cannot provide a suitable vehicle, vehicle hire may be available through the practical delivery partner for an additional fee. Availability and hire costs must be confirmed before practical training is booked.

How is the course delivered?

Stage 1 – Online learning

Complete the required online learning modules through the Eureka Digital Training learning platform. Online study allows you to progress flexibly while developing the underpinning knowledge required for practical driver instruction.

The online component covers areas including:

• fatigue management;
• work health and safety;
• low-risk driving behaviour;
• professional conduct;
• driver-training preparation;
• communication and learner support; and
• training and assessment principles.

Stage 2 – Practical training

After completing the required online modules and meeting the course progression requirements, you will undertake practical training with an approved RAISE Training practical delivery partner.

The practical component focuses on:

• planning and preparing driver-training sessions;
• demonstrating and explaining driving techniques;
• delivering in-vehicle instruction;
• managing safety and risk;
• observing driver performance; and
• providing effective coaching and feedback.

Stage 3 – Practical assessment and completion

You must successfully complete the required practical assessment activities and submit all required evidence. RAISE Training will then conduct its final assessment, compliance and certification review.

Expected timeframes

Online component

The online modules are self-paced. Applicants are ordinarily expected to complete the required online learning within six months of receiving access.

Practical component

The standard practical training and assessment component is ordinarily scheduled over approximately two days.

The final arrangement may vary according to:

• the applicant’s heavy vehicle experience;
• the licence class and vehicle configuration;
• trainer and vehicle availability;
• the applicant’s preparation and performance;
• location and travel requirements; and
• whether additional training or assessment is required.

Practical training and assessment are delivered through approved RAISE Training practical delivery partners in selected regions across Queensland and New South Wales.

Availability depends on the applicant’s location, vehicle class, trainer availability, vehicle arrangements and booking demand.

This is a nationally recognised Australian Qualifications Framework qualification. Where applicable, the academic transcript will identify the heavy vehicle driving unit completed or recognised as part of the qualification.
