Do you need a licence?

Yes. You MUST hold a licence a Heavy Combination drivers licence in order to operate a vehicle which includes:

Articulated vehicles with 3 or more axles

Heavy rigid vehicle trailer combinations including unladen dolly, with 3 or more axles

Any towed trailer with a GVM more than 9 tonnes

To be eligible for an HC licence course, you must:

Have held a class MR or HR licence or equivalent for one year or more. Any time you've spent on a P2 MR or HR licence counts, but you can't practice to drive an HC vehicle, or upgrade to an HC licence until you hold a full class MR or HR licence;

Pass the 'Combination' Driver Knowledge Test (DKT);

Pass an eyesight test; and

Meet the required medical requirements, as determined by the licensing authority.

Duration

Drivers upgrading to the HC licence receive up to 12 hours (depending on the gearbox endorsement) of training and assessment activity time.

Transport for NSW Scheme Policies and Procedures state that a minimum of 6 hours assessment time plus Final Competency Assessment (FCA) should occur.

If additional time is required for a client to reach a competent standard, additional course fees may be applied. This is clearly explained at enquiry (email and phone), further explained and agreed upon at enrolment.

Learning Outcomes

This course is based on the requirements of the Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) Scheme.
